Posted Jan 29th, 20:22 The most exciting news of 2008 will not be the Presidential Election. It will be the publication of my new website, Jewel Shepard.com This should not be confused with any other website of the same name, as I am the Official Jewel Shepard one-stop shopping internet place to be. You can tell the difference because this website offers dozens of photos of me and over fifty thousand words about my life, movies starring me, and videos of me searching the world in a bikini for anyone who has ever heard of me. Personally, I’d take all of me home. You need bo...

Reading this news article, the following sentence kinda leaped off the screen at me... While the pope and Bush differ on such major issues on the Iraq war, capital punishment and the U.S. embargo against Cuba, they do find common ground in opposing abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research.

Hey, see if you like this as much as I do. This site ran a contest: Design a vintage magazine ad for a modern product. That is to say, show how a current item might have been advertised had it existed back when it didn't exist. Or conversely, entrants could take a vintage product and sell them in a modern way. The only rule was no iPods and no iPhones. Here's what they came up with...and some of them are darned clever. Make sure you read all four pages.

Jack Klugman is suing NBC over his share of profits from the TV series, Quincy, M.E. The show was on from 1976 to 1983 and you have to figure that if that series didn't make truckloads of bucks, nothing could. I mean, it would be like McDonald's claiming there was never any money in selling burgers and fries. Still, at last report, NBC Universal was saying with at least a semi-straight face that Quincy was $66 million in the red so there w...

Pat Paulsen was kind of the Stephen Colbert of his day. He was best known as "that comedian who keeps running for president," a bit he did with such deadpan perseverence that a lot of people probably thought he was more serious about it than he actually was. He also did a lot of routines that came under that category of spontaneous stunts — a category later dominated for a time by a Mr. Andy Kaufman. Paulsen would go on TV shows and explain, with utter intensity and a face straighter than you could possibly imagine, that he could walk on water. Then, after a ve...

Lawrence O'Donnell on the Iraq Study Group report. Briefly, he believes that we're going to have to surrender in Iraq and that the report was a decent plan to do that without calling it "surrender." Critics like Rush Limbaugh, he says, are spoiling that option by identifying it as surrender.

Frederick W. Kagan makes the case that victory is still possible in Iraq. I'm a little fuzzy on the current definition of what will constitute "victory" in Iraq and I get the feeling I'm not alone. In any case, that article may tell us what the White House has in mind.

One of my favorite places on this planet is the tourist attraction in Los Angeles known as Farmer's Market. Back as late as the 70's, everything in that area then was Gilmore: Gilmore Bank, Gilmore Field, Gilmore Stadium, Gilmore gas station, etc. The Gilmore Bank is still there, though in another building. If any of my friends are as fascinated by the place as I am, they might want to check out the new Farmer's Market website. It's just been remodelled and there's a very nice

Posted Apr 22nd, 10:24 Jeffrey Toobin on the demise of habeas corpus. Someone needs to come up with a term to describe things like this...when a political party passes a bill which they'd fight to the death to stop if it had been the other side's idea. I really think Democrats could have killed this if they'd had the sense to have Bill Clinton propose it first.

I held off commenting on this just in case there's a big cash prize for being the one-millionth person on the Internet to comment on the New Yorker cover about Barack Obama... Yes, you're offended by The New Yorker's cover. You're supposed to be offended by it. The question to me is whether you're offended by the fact that there are people in this country (people who will actually vote) who believe some or all of that about Senator Obama. Or are you offended by the New Yorker summarizing and satirizing that viewpoint? I'm with the first group and I thin...

Last Saturday morning around 6 AM, two men attempted to rob a restaurant here in Los Angeles. The restaurant was Lawry's the Prime Rib, a fine institution where I like to dine on occassion. The men put a gun to the skull of one of the chefs and asked, "Where's the money?" Then they demanded to know where the safe was. When the chef told them he couldn't open the safe, the intruders got spooked (that's what it said in all the news reports) and fled. It turned out that the police had been monitoring the two chaps — they'd pulled armed robberies before — and as...

I really admire the effort and artistry of the JibJab videos. Out of just about nothing, those folks built an art form and a style and what I gather is a pretty successful company. One of the ways they've achieved this is by really putting maximum effort into each project. A lot of people out there think computer animation is easy; that you just click this and load that and the computer does all the labor that formerly had to be done by hand. Wrongo. Each JibJab video represents skillions of person hours and an awful lot of hands-on artistry. Here's a link to their latest —

Posted Aug 3rd, 10:16 Eugene Robinson reminds us of the debate in this country about torture, and adds in some new revelations. He thinks that before Bush leaves office, he'll issue blanket pardons for everyone who has been involved in "enhanced interrogation" techniques. I think that's the least of it. I think Bush is going to pardon almost everyone who ever served him for almost every crime you can think of, including war profiteering and lying to Congress.

As you may (emphasis on the "may") have heard, the Enquirer claims to have nailed down proof that John Edwards...well, it's a bit arguable as to what they've proved. They claim it's that Edwards really did have an affair (previously and quite convincingly denied) with this woman named Rielle Hunter and fathered a "love child" with her. The Enquirer reportage suggests what they've proved is that he visited her in the ...

Boy, there are a lot of reasons to be disgusted by (or disappointed in) John Edwards today. You can almost pick and choose the ones you want to feature. Having the affair is a moral and human failing but it's also just plain foolish. Anyone who aspires to high office in this country oughta know that there will be powerful forces out there, paying money to people who can expose this kind of thing...and I still don't get why he thought he could meet with "the other woman" at the Beverly Hilton in the middle of a press junket and not be spotted. His confession/ apology is ...

Posted Aug 8th, 16:42 Joe Conason, whose reporting and analysis I'm inclined to trust as much as I trust anyone's, thinks there's something to the charge that we're in Iraq partly because the Bush administration had a memo forged in order to get us there. I'm not ready to assume this is true but it looks like there's enough evidence that it oughta be the subject of investigations and hearings and all those things we used to only do in this country when someone thought they would bring down Bill Clinton. I think what's being alleged here is a ...

Farhad Manjoo reviews the growing conspiracy theories regarding the post-9/11 anthrax attacks. For what it's worth, I am not a big believer in most conspiracy theories. I'm convinced Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone gunman. I'm convinced O.J. Simpson was a lone knifeman. I'm convinced the 9/11 attacks were just what they appeared and not some controlled demolition arranged by Dick Cheney. But what's been released so far to prove that Bruce Ivins was the anthrax attacker (and the only one involved) strikes me as pretty flimsy. He may well ...

It's a hotel and it's a coffee shop and a bar but its main function is as a venue to hold banquets, meetings, weddings, receptions, parties, etc. It's very large and has many rooms of all sizes for such events, and it's known for quaint and lovely surroundings, mediocre service and the worst, most overpriced banquet food you ever tasted. The place has endured for many years, partly because it's something of an institution and partly because if you need to hol...

Posted Aug 18th, 13:22 Every few days from now 'til the election, I'm going to be reminding you — as a way of reminding myself — that polls are nowhere near as reliable as we often wish they were. The time to remember that is not when your guy is a little behind. It's when he's a little ahead that you have to remember that. This does not mean the polls are meaningless. I think it's safe to say that Obama's going to win California and McCain's going to take Utah...but states where the candidates are within ten points of each other are probably best viewed as toss-ups. You can especially use up a lot o...
